Representing  100+ Years Of Excellence In Education

Chairman’s Message

Dear Friends and Compatriots,

A NATION THAT DOES NOT HONOR ITS HEROES IS NOT WORTH DYING FOR”

I am very pleased to bring to your attention the imminent launch and inauguration of the “Spio-Garbrah Foundation”.

The Spio-Garbrah Foundation will be devoted to Ghana and Africa’s transformation through the empowering confluence of Education and Technology. The Foundation represents some 100 years of contributions to the educational foundations of the Gold Coast and Ghana by the Spio-Garbrah family.

Unknown to most, my grandfather, Josiah Spio-Garbrah, (1876-1968), as Inspector of Schools in the Gold Coast, working closely under Governor Gordon Guggisberg, was the highest-ranked African in the Education Department in that era. He played illustrious roles in strengthening the educational system of the Gold Coast in the 1920s and 30s. Josiah was instrumental in the founding and early beginnings of Achimota School and earned the coveted Imperial Service Medal for outstanding service to this country.

My father, Britton Spio-Garbrah (1913-88), attended Achimota School and Wesley Teachers Training College, and taught at Achimota from 1935-1953. He was the founding Headmaster of Konongo-Odumase Secondary School from 1953-58. After becoming the first African Deputy Director of Broadcasting (1958-63), he was appointed by President Nkrumah as Ghana’s Ambassador to Tunisia, and later to Czechoslovakia, Poland and Hungary. After his retirement from the diplomatic service, he decided to rejoin the Teaching Staff at Achimota School for two years, to demonstrate his life-long commitment to education.

As you may know, I was educated at Achimota Primary and Secondary Schools and attended the University of Ghana, and later studied in the USA. I worked for the World Bank and the African Development Bank before being appointed as Ghana’s Ambassador to the United States.

After becoming Minister of Communication and then Minister of Education, I was privileged to lead in the creation of the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund), which has mobilized billions of Ghana Cedis each year to support education at all levels.

I was appointed the founding President of Dominion University College and utilized my position as CEO of the UK-based Commonwealth Telecoms Organization to organize hundreds of knowledge-sharing events and training programs throughout the Commonwealth.

In my retirement years, I have devoted considerable time to nurturing the next generation of Ghanaians to become worthier citizens of our country and our continent, by creating the African Business Centre for Developing Education (ABCDE) in 2012. I have also published the Ghana Directory of Scholarships and Financial Assistance, (GDSFA) to assist thousands of parents and students to obtain funding for their education.

I was appointed Chairman of the African Education Trust Fund in 2022 and was elected a member of the Achimota School Endowment Trust Fund Committee in June 2023, to continue this precious work of transforming lives.

The Spio-Garbrah Foundation is dedicated to contributing to the transformation of human capital through Education, Technology and Skills Training in Ghana and Africa, to enable Africans to compete more effectively in the global economy.

As I turn 70 on 10th September 2023, it has weighed on my conscience that the task of transforming Africa, especially through education and technology, must involve as many of my friends and admirers as I can muster, hence the Spio-Garbrah Foundation through which you can join me on this exciting journey of human transformation.

Many of our youth, eager to secure their own future, are joining me in this broad mobilization agenda. I am authorizing some of them to write to you and to call you to discuss what you can do to assist this worthy endeavour. I would like to hear from you too, if there are some specific suggestions you would like to discuss with me.

Many thanks for your kind attention to my request. May the Good Lord reward you mightily even as you invest in Ghana and in Africa’s children and our common humanity.

Eternal blessings,

Sincerely,

Ekwow Spio-Garbrah
